Guides › Setting up the connection
Setting up the connection
The participants’ smartphones connect directly to your computer — without an account and usually without internet. Under Connection you choose the way for this and check before class whether it works. This guide shows the four ways, the address of the computer and the self-test with a smartphone.

Four ways to your computer
Step 1 of 11Open Connection. The four cards are the possible ways; a click on a card selects it, and the choice applies from the next session on. Hotspot is the most reliable way: your laptop or smartphone sets up its own Wi-Fi. Shared Wi-Fi uses the network of the room, Mobile router a device you bring along, Online (relay server) a relay server on the internet.

Hotspot: enter name and password
Step 2 of 11In the Hotspot card, enter the Wi-Fi name (SSID) and the Wi-Fi password of your hotspot. With a password, the projector’s start screen also shows a small QR code through which the smartphones join the Wi-Fi directly. Important: your computer itself must be in this network — with a laptop hotspot it is automatically.

Shared Wi-Fi
Step 3 of 11With Shared Wi-Fi, the computer and the smartphones are in the same network of the room. LehrPuls fills in the Wi-Fi your computer is currently in by itself. Many university networks, however, keep devices apart from each other — so check this way beforehand with the self-test further down. The selected card carries the label Selected.

Mobile router
Step 4 of 11A mobile router is a small travel router that you bring along — for example one from GL.iNet. It sets up its own Wi-Fi without internet, independent of the room’s Wi-Fi, and does not keep the devices apart from each other. In the Mobile router card, enter the Wi-Fi name (SSID) and the Wi-Fi password of the router, and connect your computer to this Wi-Fi before class; the card confirms this with the computer’s address. How to set up the router once is described in the expandable section Set up a mobile router at the end of the page.

Online through the relay server
Step 5 of 11If no shared network works, choose Online (relay server): the computer and the smartphones then only need internet access, and the answers travel encrypted through the LehrPuls relay server. Check relay tests whether it can be reached.

Room joins over Wi-Fi as well
Step 6 of 11If some participants are in the room and some at home, tick Room joins over Wi-Fi as well. Devices on the same network as your computer then join directly, everyone else via the relay — in the same session. Like the shared Wi-Fi, the room path is not end-to-end encrypted.

Two QR codes on the projector
Step 7 of 11The projector then shows two QR codes: In the room for devices on your computer’s network (with the name of the Wi-Fi once LehrPuls knows it) and Online for everyone else. The join code applies to both. During questions both appear small in the corner, and Large QR shows both full-screen.

Address of this computer
Step 8 of 11If your computer has several network connections — for example Wi-Fi and cable, or a VPN —, LehrPuls chooses the address for the join link automatically. If it is wrong, choose the right connection here; the expandable section Which address is the right one? helps you with that.

Check reachability
Step 9 of 11Before class, the self-test shows whether a smartphone reaches your computer. Start test shows a QR code; scan it with a smartphone that is in the same network as the participants will be later. The page waits for the call and counts the seconds.

Reachable
Step 10 of 11When the call arrives, the page reports Reachable and notes “works” with the date on the card of that way. If the call does not arrive, a notice explains the usual causes — mostly the smartphone is in a different network, or the Wi-Fi keeps devices apart; then the hotspot helps.

Instructions for hotspot, router and firewall
Step 11 of 11At the end of the page there are three expandable sections: how to set up a hotspot on macOS, Windows, iOS and Android, how to set up a mobile router, and what the firewall asks on first start.
