Using the cockpit

The cockpit is the window in which you work with LehrPuls. This guide shows how it is laid out, how to show, hide and widen columns, how the tables work, and which keyboard shortcuts and help are available.

The layout of the window

Title bar, sidebar with its foot, and the work area.

  1. 1

    The cockpit at a glance

    Step 1 of 4

At the top is the title bar with the name of the license holder. On the left is the dark sidebar: at the very top the word mark (it opens the website in the browser), below it the areas — at the top what you need before and during the lecture, below that stock maintenance and follow-up. At the bottom is the foot of the sidebar. On the right is the work area with the selected page. While a session is running, the red Live session entry at the very top is your way back to the live cockpit.

    The foot of the sidebar

    Step 2 of 4

You can reach these controls from every page: the Projector switch shows and hides the projector window. Second window opens LehrPuls once more. Messages lists all recent notifications so you can read them again; a red badge counts unread errors. Below that you choose the language of the interface and the content language (Content: DE, Content: EN …) — the language in which your questions, topics and playlists appear in the cockpit. The last icon collapses the sidebar.

    Two windows side by side

    Step 3 of 4

Second window opens LehrPuls in another window — from the Playlists page with Topics & Questions, from everywhere else with the Playlists. That way you put a playlist together with the question stock right next to it, without switching pages all the time. What you change in one window is picked up by the other as soon as you switch back to it. The tooltip names the target. There is no second window during a session; it closes when a session starts.

    Collapsing the sidebar

    Step 4 of 4

When collapsed, a narrow bar with the icons remains, and the work area becomes wider. Point at an icon with the mouse and the tooltip names the area and what it is for. A click on the bottom icon expands the sidebar again; after a restart it is always expanded.

Columns and tables

Split pages with collapse buttons and dividers; sorting, column choice, printing and exporting tables.

  1. 1

    Pages with three columns

    Step 1 of 5

Topics & Questions is split into three: the topic tree on the left, the question list in the middle, the preview of the selected question on the right. Drag the vertical dividers between the columns with the mouse to make a column wider or narrower; LehrPuls remembers the width. The two buttons above the list hide the left or right column completely.

    Hiding a column

    Step 2 of 5

Without the topic tree, the question list has all the room. Above the list, the path of the selected topic is shown so that you know where you are working. The same button shows the tree again. LehrPuls remembers this for next time as well.

  3. 3

    The Playlists page

    Step 3 of 5

On the Playlists page, the table of all playlists is at the top, below it the tree of the selected playlist and on the right the preview. The button to the left of the heading hides the table — then the tree has the full height —, and the button above the preview hides the preview. Here, too, you drag the divider between tree and preview with the mouse.

    Sorting and paging tables

    Step 4 of 5

All tables in LehrPuls work the same way. A click on a column header sorts by that column, a second click reverses the order, a third removes the sorting. Drag the edge between two column headers to make a column wider. At the bottom, under Records per page, you choose how many rows appear at once and page through with the arrows next to it.

    The menu of a table

    Step 5 of 5

The ⋮ menu above a table (tooltip More actions) gathers what concerns the whole list. Print playlist overview prints the table with the visible columns, in the sorting currently chosen. Under Export, Export playlist overview (CSV) saves it as a file for Excel — always with all columns. Show/hide columns expands the list of columns; a click sets or removes the check mark. Every table has this menu; the entries are worded slightly differently on each page.

Keyboard shortcuts and help

Moving through lists with the keyboard, tooltips on every icon, and the jump into the manual.

  1. 1

Moving through lists with the keyboard

    Step 1 of 4

In the question, course and session lists, in the playlist tree and in the playlist overview, ↑ and ↓ move the selection — without clicking every row. Holding Shift, ⇧↑ and ⇧↓ move the selected entry, ⇧← and ⇧→ outdent and indent it in the topic and playlist trees. In the playlist tree, 1, 2 and 3 set the category Must, Should or Could; with Cmd-click or Ctrl-click you select several entries. The shortcuts work as long as no input field has the focus and no dialog is open.

    Tooltips explain every icon

    Step 2 of 4

Many buttons only show an icon. Hold the mouse over one for a moment and a tooltip tells you what the button does — here Add questions in the toolbar of the playlist tree. The info icon (i) in the toolbar opens a quick guide to peer instruction, question blocks, groups and stations. If a text in a list is cut off, the tooltip shows it in full.

  3. 3

    Read in the manual

    Step 3 of 4

Where a page would need to explain more than fits on it, there is a Read in the manual button — for example in every tab of Analytics. It jumps straight to the matching section of the manual; the tooltip names the chapter number and title so that you can also find the place in the PDF manual.

  4. 4

    All shortcuts in the manual

    Step 4 of 4

Chapter 14 of the Manual lists all keyboard shortcuts with the place where they apply — from the space bar in the live session and the shortcuts of the projector control to Cmd+Enter or Ctrl+Enter for saving in the question editor. You can reach the manual at any time via Manual in the sidebar.
