More tools during a session
What goes beyond the basic flow of a session: join modes, test run and spontaneous session, questions and messages, peer instruction, a second run, the smartphone remote, added questions, recap, podium, and pausing and resuming. The basic flow is shown in the guide Running a session.
Join modes, test run and spontaneous session
How participants join — anonymously, with a pseudonym or with names from the course list — and what the smartphone shows in each case; plus the test run, which saves nothing, and the spontaneous session without any prepared questions.
-
1
Choose the join mode
Step 1 of 12In the start dialog, the Participation field sets how participants join. It is the most consequential decision of the session, because it determines what you can analyze afterwards. Anonymous records no names; with Pseudonym each person chooses a name. With names and Name + student ID need a course, which you assign in the playlist’s Properties; Name + student ID can only be chosen if every person in the course has a student ID. What joining with a student ID looks like is shown in the guide Courses and participants.

With names: allow guests
Step 2 of 12With With names, the Allow guests switch appears (default: on). Then people who are not on the course list — visitors, latecomers — can take part as well and type in their own name. Below, Allow recap and Follow-up determine whether the devices may look up the revealed questions and how long they keep the review after the end. Test run at the bottom left starts a session that is discarded when it ends; more on that below.

Anonymous: straight in
Step 3 of 12In an anonymous session, the smartphone joins after scanning without any input. At the top is a device label and next to it the code made of one letter and three digits. With it, the person can continue on another device: choose Already in? Enter code there. A one-time hint explains this on first joining.

Pseudonym: choose a name
Step 4 of 12With Pseudonym, the smartphone asks for a self-chosen name; Join completes joining. The answers belong to the same person throughout the session without you knowing who it is — a good middle ground between anonymous and named. Each name can only be connected once; if it is already taken, the page asks for another one.

With names: pick from the course list
Step 5 of 12With With names, the smartphone shows the course list with a search field; tapping one’s own name joins. If guests are allowed, I'm not on the list appears below — then the name is typed in. If someone switches devices, the person picks their name again on the new device and takes over their entry with all answers.

Who is here, who is missing?
Step 6 of 12In the live cockpit, the list icon next to the number of connected devices opens the Participants & groups dialog. It shows who is connected and who from the course list is still missing; guests carry the mark “guest” there. Names only reach the projector if you explicitly choose so.

Close joining
Step 7 of 12Once everyone is in, a click on Joining open in the header closes access. The button then reads Joining closed: new devices are turned away, and the join QR code disappears from the projector. Anyone already in can still reconnect at any time. A second click opens joining again.

Test run for checking beforehand
Step 8 of 12To check a playlist on the projector beforehand, switch on Test run at the bottom left of the start dialog; the start button then turns orange and reads Start test run. The test run behaves like a normal session — projector, devices, reveal, model solution — but does not count as a lesson held. The switch is off again every time the dialog opens.

The “Test run” badge
Step 9 of 12In the live cockpit, the orange Test run badge sits at the top so that nobody mistakes it for a real lesson. The Pause session button is missing: a test run cannot be kept, only ended.

10
End and discard the test run
Step 10 of 12End asks for confirmation and discards the test run completely: no answers, no times, no progress, nothing in the analytics. Instant questions and added questions from the test run disappear again; what was in the playlist before stays untouched, and the up next mark stays where it was.

Spontaneous session: no preparation
Step 11 of 12For a lesson without any prepared questions, the Playlists page has the Spontaneous session button. It starts immediately, without a start dialog, and creates a playlist “Spontaneous · date” for it. The session runs without a course, with the join mode you last chose in the start dialog; if that was Name + student ID, it runs With names, and participants type their name themselves.

Questions arise as instant questions
Step 12 of 12The live page starts empty; a message names the join mode. Every question is created with Instant question — choose the type, add text if you like, Add — as shown in the guide Running a session. Created instant questions are then listed under Topics & Questions with the tag “sofort”. A spontaneous session ends like any other with End.

Questions, responses and messages
The way from the audience to you and back: participants ask questions and upvote each other, you put questions and answers on the wall and send a message with a file to all devices.

1
Switch on questions from the audience
Step 1 of 8The right column holds the Questions (n) area; it is off at the start of every session. Questions on shows a button on the devices with which participants can write to you throughout the session. Allow to everyone additionally permits posts to everyone — with the sender’s name, and the others upvote them. Approval shows new posts only after you have checked them, Allow attachments lets participants attach a photo or PDF.

Step 2 of 8The devices now show a button with a speech bubble and question mark at the top. It opens Messages and questions. First, participants choose who the post goes to: To the instructor (default, only you read it) or To everyone. Then they write up to 280 characters and submit with Send.

Upvoting instead of raising hands
Step 3 of 8Posts to everyone appear on all devices, the one with the most upvotes at the top. With the arrow next to someone else’s post, participants upvote; a second tap takes the upvote back; the down arrow downvotes. That way the question many people have moves up — not the loudest voice. Own posts carry the mark yours.

Questions in the cockpit
Step 4 of 8The cockpit lists all posts, the open ones ordered by upvotes; below each one it says who it came from and whom it went to (“to you only”, “to everyone”). The Reply arrow opens Send message with this person as recipient. The projector icon puts a post on the wall without the sender, the check mark marks it as answered, the crossed-out eye removes it from the devices. Questions survive pausing and are in the analytics after the session.

Step 5 of 8The projector shows the question in large type below the line “Question from the audience”, with the number of upvotes and without the sender. It stays until you take it down or mark it as answered — or until you open, close or reveal a question: then it leaves by itself.

Review the responses
Step 6 of 8Under Responses (n), the answers to the selected question come in as cards, each with the time taken. The star keeps an answer: it moves into the yellow bar above, from which you show one after another during the discussion. The projector icon puts an answer on the wall without a name — only the person icon releases the name. For open questions you can also sort answers into answer groups, grade them by hand or exclude them from the analysis. What an answer on the wall looks like is shown in the guide Open question.

Send a message with a file to everyone
Step 7 of 8Send message below the main button sends a message to the devices at any time — even while a question is running. The Message field takes up to 500 characters; a link becomes clickable on the devices. Drag files into the framed area or choose them with Choose files …: images, PDF, Office files, text and ZIP archives, up to 20 MB per file. Under To whom? you choose everyone, individual groups (during a group phase) or individual participants.

Peer instruction: round 1
Step 1 of 11A question with the red ↻2 runs in two rounds (switched on in the playlist via ⋮ More actions → Turn on peer instruction, see the guide Playlists). First everyone answers silently on their own. The main button now reads Close → discussion: it closes round 1 without revealing. Questions where between 30 and 70 % are right are ideal.

Discussion with the neighbors
Step 2 of 11After round 1 is closed, the projector automatically shows the discussion slide — without the distribution, so that the discussion stays open. The smartphones show their own answer and the same task: discuss with the neighbors, then vote again. Two to three minutes are enough.

Step 4 of 11After round 2 you reveal as usual. The projector compares both rounds: each bar shows the share from round 1 and round 2 side by side. The shift toward the correct answer is the learning effect — and visible to everyone. Cockpit and smartphones state the same share from round 1.

Ask a played question again
Step 5 of 11Select a question on the left that has already been played. The main button then reads Ask again: it appends a new run — with its own answers — and opens it immediately; the first run stays unchanged with its answers and analysis. If the selection is still on the question played last, Ask again is a small button below the main button. Peer instruction questions do not offer this — they have their two rounds.

Smartphone remote
Step 7 of 11If you want to walk through the room while asking, you control the session from your own smartphone. Remote in the header (smartphone icon) shows a QR code with the address and a six-digit code. The code is valid for ten minutes and for one device only. The remote needs the shared Wi-Fi or the hotspot, because the smartphone talks directly to your computer; it does not work via the Relay.

Add questions
Step 10 of 11If the question you need right now is not in the playlist, Add questions … next to Instant question helps. From the question pool … opens the same selection dialog as on the Playlists page, From another playlist … takes over a playlist, a section or a question block. Add exit ticket adds three ready-made questions for the end of the lesson: a scale about the lesson and the open questions “What are you taking away from this lesson?” and “What remained unclear?”.

Recap, podium, pausing and resuming

Recap on or off
Step 1 of 11Whether participants may look up the revealed questions on their device is set by the Allow recap switch in the start dialog.
