Projector, projector control and overlay

What participants see on the wall and how you control it: the projector window in the phases of a question, the “On the projector” line, projector control with zoom, look-back and preview, pause and presenting, the discussion round without devices and the overlay on top of your own presentation. How a session starts and runs is shown in the guide Running a session.

Projector window and projector control

What the projector shows in the phases of a question, how you read in the cockpit what is on the wall right now, and how you zoom the wall and bring up single elements with projector control.

  1. 1

    Projector window and live cockpit

    Step 1 of 9

LehrPuls shows the picture for the room in a separate projector window. It opens by itself when a session starts (you can switch this off under Settings → Session & projector); the Projector switch at the bottom of the sidebar shows and hides it at any time, and the cross on the window only hides it. Drag the projector window onto the projector and keep the cockpit on the laptop. What is on the wall right now is shown in the purple On the projector line in the center of the live cockpit.

  2. 2

    The “On the projector” line

    Step 2 of 9

On the left, a small live preview shows exactly the picture on the projector; next to it, in words, is what participants see — at the start the join page, later for example “Question running: …” or “Results: …”. A click on the preview or on the arrow icon on the right opens projector control. The button with the picture-in-picture icon switches the overlay on top of your own presentation (a separate variant of this guide). While something covers the running question, Clear the wall appears here as well. The line is visible in the simple view too.

Before the first question: the start screen

    Step 3 of 9

As long as no question is running, the projector shows the join page: the QR code, the code and the address to type in, and below them the number of participants who have joined. If a Wi-Fi name with password is stored on the Connection page, a second, small QR code next to it takes the smartphones straight into the right Wi-Fi.

    Question running

    Step 4 of 9

With the main button (or the space bar) you open the question. The projector shows the title, question text and answer options; at the bottom it counts the submissions. The join QR code moves small into the corner so latecomers can join at any time. Which answer was chosen how often, the room only sees at the reveal.

    Question closed

    Step 5 of 9

After Close, LehrPuls accepts no more answers; the projector keeps showing the question, and at the bottom it reads “Submissions closed”. This way you can still talk about the question before showing the result.

    Results

    Step 6 of 9

Show results shows the distribution as bars and highlights the correct answer. The model solution only appears when you ask for it: after the reveal, the Show on projector button sits below the question in the cockpit.

    Projector control

    Step 7 of 9

A click on the live preview opens projector control: a large copy of the projector that is also a remote control — the wall follows every move. The title bar holds Full view, paging and zoom, the switches Fit content, QR top right and (with a stored Wi-Fi) Wi-Fi QR in the corner, and Look-back from earlier sessions …. When the wall shows a revealed question with a model solution, the model solution buttons are there too — here it is already on the wall, so the button reads Remove model solution. At the top right sits the main button: with it or the space bar you move the session on without leaving projector control.

    Zoom and pan

    Step 8 of 9

With + and − (buttons or keys) or with Ctrl or ⌘ and the mouse wheel you zoom the wall — up to 2000 %, with the wheel towards the mouse position. With the wall zoomed in, dragging with the mouse pans the view, as do the arrow keys; unzoomed, Page Up and Page Down page through a long wall. The second picture shows the projector: it follows projector control exactly. Full view or the 0 key resets everything.

  9. 9

    Bring up a single element

    Step 9 of 9

A click in projector control on an image, a formula, a table or the model solution brings exactly that element up full screen on the wall — here the model solution with the voltage divider formula. The pointer then shows a minus, and a second click brings back the whole wall. Every new piece of content on the wall starts in the full view again anyway.

Look-back and preview on the projector

In the middle of the lesson, bring an earlier question with its result back to the wall, announce an upcoming question or show a result from an earlier session — on the projector only; the participants’ devices stay with the current question.

  1. 1

    Select a played question

    Step 1 of 9

Two questions have already run and been revealed; the wall shows the results of the second one. Click the earlier question on the left. In the center, Your view shows it with the Played badge, and its heading carries the Look-back on the projector (B) button — the B key does the same, in the simple view too.

    The look-back on the wall

    Step 2 of 9

The projector shows the earlier question with its results, just as they stood back then; the join QR code stays in the corner. The smartphones (second picture) stay unchanged on the current question — the look-back affects the wall only.

  3. 3

    Look-back in the cockpit

    Step 3 of 9

The On the projector line now reports “Look-back: …”, and the button at the question reads Remove from projector (B) — it brings the picture back to the running question. If the question has a model solution, the On the projector line also offers Show model solution: the solution then appears on the wall only; the devices do not receive it.

  4. 4

    Model solution in the look-back

    Step 4 of 9

The model solution now appears below the question, and the On the projector line adds “with model solution”. Hide model solution in the same line removes it again. This works the same for the preview and for look-backs from earlier sessions.

    Screenshot Projector 11Model solution

  5. 5

    Preview of an upcoming question

    Step 5 of 9

Click a question that has not come up yet: the button then reads Preview on the projector (B). This way you announce a task or read it together before opening it. The selected question is highlighted in yellow — the main button would open it next.

  6. 6

    The preview on the wall

    Step 6 of 9

The projector shows the question the way participants will see it — without results. It is not open yet; nobody can answer yet. Remove from projector (B) ends the preview.

  7. 7

    Look-back from earlier sessions

    Step 7 of 9

In projector control (click the live preview), Look-back from earlier sessions … opens the Look-back & preview on the projector dialog. On the Earlier sessions tab, choose a session on the left and one of its questions on the right — for example last time’s mood poll, to show how things have developed. The Topics & questions tab brings any question from your collection to the wall as a preview, even one that does not appear in this session.

The question appears on the wall with its result from back then; projector control stays open and shows the same picture. Here, too, the devices stay on the current question.

  9. 9

    Clear the wall

    Step 9 of 9

Whatever you bring to the wall over the running question — look-back, preview, model solution, a board — is taken down again by Clear the wall; the button is in projector control and in the On the projector line, but only while something is shown. There is only ever one insert on the wall: bringing up something new takes down the previous one, and opening a question clears every insert.

Pause, presenting and ending the discussion

Three ways to clear the wall without ending the session: Pause halts everything and then continues with the same question, Presenting clears the projector and the devices for a longer stretch with your own slides, and End discussion only takes the result off the wall after a reveal.

  1. 1

    The buttons in the header

    Step 1 of 7

If the session runs from a playlist, the header shows a running time display, and its right half holds the Pause and Presenting buttons. Next to them, Discussion round switches to a session without devices (a separate variant of this guide). Pause session and End at the far right are something else: they take the session off the network.

  2. 2

    Pause: the break screen

    Step 2 of 7

Pause stops the time display and the timer of the open question. The projector shows a calm break screen with the join QR code for latecomers. The remaining time is kept: no countdown runs on the devices or on the projector during the break.

  3. 3

    Resume after the break

    Step 3 of 7

In the cockpit the button now reads Resume, and the remaining-time ring is gray and frozen. Resume continues the time display and the timer exactly where they stood. If you open the next question instead, the break ends by itself.

    Screenshot Cockpit 11Resume22paused remaining time

  4. 4

    Presenting: wall and devices cleared

    Step 4 of 7

Presenting is for switching to a longer stretch with your own slides. A question that is still open is closed, the projector and the devices go back to the start screen, and the time display stops. The join QR code stays, so latecomers can still join; the smartphones (second picture) show “About to start”.

  5. 5

    Continue with a new question

    Step 5 of 7

While presenting, the header button reads End presenting, and Pause is hidden. You simply continue with the main button: it opens the next question, and presenting ends by itself.

    Cockpit
  6. 6

    End the discussion

    Step 6 of 7

After the reveal, LehrPuls offers End discussion as soon as nothing is open any more. It is the small gesture for a transition: the question and its results disappear from the projector and the devices, and the time display keeps running. As a rule of thumb: End discussion for a short transition, Presenting for a longer stretch without questions, Pause when the running question should continue exactly where it stood.

Discussion round without devices

Sometimes nobody should reach for a device: in a discussion round the questions appear large on the wall, without join information. You can choose it at the start and switch it on and off in the middle of the session.

  1. 1

At the start: Discussion round (no devices)

    Step 1 of 6

In the playlist’s start dialog, switch on Discussion round (no devices) and click Start session. Allow recap and Follow-up disappear, because without devices there is nothing to recap. How to open the start dialog is shown in the guide Running a session.

  3. 3

    In the cockpit

    Step 3 of 6

The header carries the Discussion round badge; code, join address and participant count are missing. The Allow participants button switches to a regular session at any time — you do not have to end and restart anything.

  4. 4

The question large on the wall

    Step 4 of 6

The main button opens the question as usual. The wall shows it without a submission counter and without a QR code in the corner — room for the conversation in the hall. Devices that are already connected still receive the question and can answer.

    Screenshot Projector

  5. 5

    Plenary answer

    Step 5 of 6

In the All view, the right column offers the Plenary answer while a question is open: for choice questions you tick together with the room, and every tick appears on the projector right away; it is saved when you close or reveal. Text and numbers only reach the wall with Show on projector. In the analytics the plenary answer is marked and does not count in the statistics. It is available in every session, also with connected devices.

    Allow participants

    Step 6 of 6

After Allow participants, the join QR code is back in the corner, and participants can join and answer. The button then reads Discussion round again; connected devices stay connected with every switch.

Overlay on your own presentation

If you show your slides with PowerPoint, Keynote or a PDF viewer instead of the projector window, LehrPuls can show the join code and the current question on top of your presentation — even in full screen. The overlay is a separate, transparent window; this guide shows where to switch and set it up in the cockpit and what it looks like in its small and large steps.

  1. 1

    The overlay button

    Step 1 of 6

During a session, the button with the picture-in-picture icon in the On the projector line moves the overlay on: off, small, large, off again. It is filled while the overlay is visible. The keyboard shortcut ⌘⌥L (Mac) or Ctrl+Alt+L (Windows) does the same — even while your presentation is in front. If another program already uses the shortcut, LehrPuls tells you once; the button still works.

Screenshot Cockpit 11Overlay: off, small, large
    Cockpit
  2. 2

    In the “More actions” menu

    Step 2 of 6

In the All view, the ⋮ More actions menu sits below the main button. The Overlay on your presentation entry moves it on in the same way and shows the current state and the shortcut. In the same menu, Open control view opens projector control.

Screenshot Cockpit 11Overlay on your presentation22Open control view
    Cockpit
  3. 3

Set the corner and the screen

    Step 3 of 6

Under Settings → Overlay on your presentation you choose the corner for the small card (default: bottom right) and the screen the overlay appears on: Same as the projector window (default) or Main screen. To do so, drag the projector window onto the projector once — it does not need to be visible. Both apply to this computer; a running session picks up a change right away.

Screenshot Cockpit 11Corner of the small card22Screen
    Cockpit
  4. 4

Overlay “small”: the card in the corner

    Step 4 of 6

The first click (or ⌘⌥L or Ctrl+Alt+L) shows a small card in the chosen corner on top of your presentation: the QR code, the code and the join address for latecomers, the number of connected devices and, while a question is open, the answers (“Answers 2 / 3”) and the remaining time, which turns red from ten seconds. In a discussion round, code, QR code and address are left out. The card does not take the focus away from your presentation and lets mouse clicks through: arrow keys and presentation clickers keep controlling your slides.

    Screenshot Overlay
    Overlay
  5. 5

Overlay “large”: the wall on top of your presentation

    Step 5 of 6

The second press replaces the card with exactly the picture of the projector window, in a dark frame at the bottom center — here the running question, later its results. The room sees the question and the result without you leaving your slides. The third press hides the overlay again.

    Screenshot Overlay
    Overlay
  6. 6

    The button shows the state

    Step 6 of 6

While the overlay is visible, the button in the On the projector line is filled; in the large step it carries a different icon. One more click switches the overlay off. Ending or suspending the session removes it by itself, and the keyboard shortcut is free for other programs again. If a presentation does not show the overlay in full screen, run the slide show in a window (manual, section 6.6).
