Courses and participants

A course is the participant list of a class. You only need it for sessions in which names matter — “With names” or “Name + student ID”. This guide shows how to create a course, add participants individually or from Excel/CSV, set the deletion deadline, and what joining with a student ID looks like.

  1. 1

    The Courses & Participants page

    Step 1 of 10

Under Courses & Participants all courses are listed in a table at the top — with semester, description, number of participants and deletion deadline. A click on a row shows the participant list of that course below. You start a new course with + Course. The shield icon next to it opens a sample privacy notice that you can give to your participants.

    Create a course

    Step 2 of 10

+ Course opens the New course dialog. The Name is the class as you will find it later in lists and when starting a session. The Semester tells apart courses with the same name from different years, for example “Winter term 2026/27”. The Description is optional — for group, room or notes. The Deletion deadline is the date after which the names should be deleted (GDPR); from that day on the start page reminds you. Create saves the course. At the top you choose the language: enter the name and description for each content language.

The new course in the course list

    Step 3 of 10

The new course is now in the course list and selected. Below it, its participant list is still empty. With Participant you enter people one by one, with Import you take over a whole list from Excel or CSV. The buttons at the end of the course row edit, duplicate, archive or delete the course.

    Add a person

    Step 4 of 10

Participant opens Add person. Only the Name is required — ideally “Surname First name”, then the list stays sorted by surname. The Student ID / identifier is needed for joining with “Name + student ID”; there it must match exactly. The E-mail is used by the E-mail button of the participant list for a message to everyone. The Note is visible only to you, for example the exercise group. Add puts the person on the list.

    Import a participant list

    Step 5 of 10

Import opens Import participants. At the top, choose an Excel, CSV or ODS file, for example the export from your university’s system. LehrPuls maps the columns by itself: the name is built from Name part 1 (surname) and Name part 2 (first name), plus Student ID and E-mail. If a mapping is wrong, choose the right column in the field. The Preview shows the first rows as they will be taken over. Add to list collects the people below; there you can also type names or paste a list of names.

    Check the list and import

    Step 6 of 10

The list to import is now at the bottom. Remove single entries with the cross, Clear list starts over. The Import … button states the number of people and takes them over into the course. Names that are already in the course are not added a second time.

    The participant list

    Step 7 of 10

After the import, the list appears below the course; the course row counts the participants. The Code column is a short code per person with which they can switch to another device in a session. Source shows whether someone was typed in or which file they were imported from. At the end of the row you edit or remove a person. E-mail writes to everyone with an address via your e-mail program; Groupings shows the groups formed in sessions with this course.

    Deletion deadline reminder

    Step 8 of 10

When a course reaches its deletion deadline, the start page reminds you. Delete now removes the names — the sessions and answers are kept anonymized as statistics; Remind me in 30 days postpones the reminder. You will find the Sample privacy notice for your participants on the course page (shield icon).

Joining with name and student ID

    Step 9 of 10

When you start a session, you choose how participants join: Anonymous, with a Pseudonym (a name they choose), With names (picked from the course list) or with Name + student ID. The last mode is shown here as an example: the smartphone asks for family name and student ID; LehrPuls checks both against the course list. That way nobody can sign in under someone else’s name.

    Answers with names

    Step 10 of 10

In the cockpit the answers arrive as cards. With Names on, each card shows who sent it — with the join modes With names and Name + student ID the name from the course list, with Pseudonym the chosen pseudonym, with Anonymous only “Participant 1”, “Participant 2” and so on. With Names on switched off, every card reads Anonymous. On each card, the star keeps the answer for the discussion, Show on the projector puts it on the wall, and the person icon shows or hides its name on the projector; without your release it stays anonymous there. The Plenary answer is the answer you work out together with the room: you tick or type it, the projector shows it and sets it against the correct solution when you reveal; it does not count in the statistics. In the analytics, a person’s answers can be followed across all sessions.
