Group work

In a running session LehrPuls divides the participants into groups; each group submits a joint answer. This guide shows two forms: all groups on the same question block, and stations mode with several question blocks in parallel. How to start a session is shown in the guide Running a session; you form question blocks as described in the guide Playlists.

One shared question block for all groups

All groups work on the same tasks of a question block with a shared scenario; each group submits one joint answer per subquestion, and at the end you compare the group answers on the projector (group form A, manual section 6.13 a). Twelve participants, three groups.

  1. 1

The playlist: a question block with a scenario

    Step 1 of 15

Group work needs no special playlist — one or more questions are enough, ideally a question block (symbol ⧉) with a shared scenario, so that all groups talk about the same starting point. Here the sample playlist “Presenting all question types” serves: the question block “B9 · Special exhibition …” bundles several subquestions on a museum scenario. The ▶ button on its row starts a session with this question block only.

    Start the session

    Step 2 of 15

The start dialog lists the subquestions of the question block; All checks them. Under Participation you choose the join mode. Pseudonym or With names suit group work best, because the group board and the group banner then show names. Anonymous works too: every device then carries a fixed label such as “Participant 11”, and participants find their group by that number. This guide works anonymously. Start session opens the live cockpit.

    Arrange: create groups

    Step 3 of 15

Once everyone has joined, open the Arrange menu in the right column under Participants. Create groups lets LehrPuls divide the participants; Groups by participants lets them find together themselves, each group under a letter. Participants & groups later shows who is in which group and lets you move individual people.

    Set up the group phase

    Step 4 of 15

In the Set up group phase dialog you set the Number of groups or, instead, a group size (field or group size), here three groups for twelve devices. You only need several Rounds (everyone with everyone) if you want to reshuffle within the same session. As the group form, A · Same tasks for all groups stays selected. Compute plan shows the allocation and how many pairs come together. If the session has a course and joining is not anonymous, the Course list switch also plans with those who have not joined yet. Start round 1 makes the allocation binding.

Group board on the projector, group banner on the smartphone

    Step 5 of 15

After the start, the projector shows the group board: each group with its members, a person icon shows who is connected. The join QR code stays in the corner. Every smartphone shows its group, whom it works with, and that the group’s last submission counts; the group is also shown at the top next to the device’s own label. No question is open yet.

    Step 6 of 15

The right column now holds the group phase card with the round. Names on projector switches the board between names (here the device labels) and plain group numbers. As soon as you open a question, the projector clears the board; Show groups on projector brings it back. With several planned rounds, Next round appears here.

    Open the question block

    Step 7 of 15

You open the question block as usual with the main button Show question block or the space bar. All groups get the same subquestions. If the working time should be visible, switch on the Timer below it first; even after the time runs out, the question block is only closed by you.

    The scenario comes first

    Step 8 of 15

On opening, the scenario appears first — large on the projector, as an overlay on the smartphones. Close takes the device to the subquestions; the Scenario button brings the starting point back at any time.

    The subquestions on the smartphone

    Step 9 of 15

Above the question are the group banner and the header of the question block: the numbered buttons lead to the subquestions, in any order; a check mark shows what has already been submitted. The group shares the work — every member may send any subquestion.

One submission counts for the whole group

    Step 10 of 15

Another member has sent the first subquestion. On all devices of the group it shows as sent right away, with the note Group answer · last sent by …. Every member can overwrite it with Change answer — the group’s last submission counts. Anyone who is typing at that moment keeps their input and only gets a notice.

    Submissions count in groups

    Step 11 of 15

During the group phase the cockpit counts groups instead of devices: “2 / 3 submitted” means two of three groups. In the All view, the Submissions by participant panel shows one row per group and one column per subquestion; check marks show what has been submitted. The projector footer counts groups as well.

Close the question block, reveal the subquestions

    Step 12 of 15

Another press of the space bar closes the question block for all groups. Then you reveal the subquestions one by one: R or the space bar walk the debrief subquestion by subquestion. Every closed subquestion in the tree on the left carries the compare icon (split image).

    The reveal counts groups

    Step 13 of 15

    Group answers side by side

    Step 14 of 15

The compare icon (split image) next to a subquestion puts the answers of all groups side by side on the wall, each with its group name — the moment for the discussion: where do the groups differ, and why? A second click on the same icon takes the comparison down again. Who presents for the group can be drawn with the Random wheel (see the guide Running a session).

    End the group phase

    Step 15 of 15

You ask further questions in the same composition; questions without group reference may sit in between. At the end, End group phase dissolves the allocation: the devices lose their group label, answers count per person again. In the analytics the group answers stay marked with their group.

Stations mode: several question blocks in parallel

Two question blocks run at the same time, each group works at its own station; then the groups swap stations, and at the end you compare the answers of both groups (group form C/D, manual section 6.14, variants 1 and 2). Eight participants, two groups.

  1. 1

The playlist: one question block per station

    Step 1 of 11

Stations mode needs one question block with a scenario and subquestions per station, and the question blocks sit side by side in the same section. In the sample playlist “Presenting all question types” this is the section “Group work (2 stations)” with “Station 1 · Concept” and “Station 2 · Planning”. The planned duration of the subquestions later prefills the timer. Start the section that contains all stations: the ▶ button on its row, then All and Start session in the start dialog (see the variant “One shared question block for all groups”).

    Groups for stations mode

    Step 2 of 11

Open Arrange → Create groups in the right column. The Number of groups equals the number of stations — or a multiple of it if several small groups are to work on the same station; here two groups for eight devices. As the group form choose C/D · Station work (round 1 + assignment board), then Compute plan. If the groups stay together for all runs, one round is enough; if they are to be reshuffled after each run, enter as many rounds under Rounds (everyone with everyone) as there will be runs. Round 1 + stations makes the allocation binding and opens the assignment board.

    The assignment board

    Step 3 of 11

The assignment board has one row per group with its station next to it — prefilled with group 1 → station 1, group 2 → station 2 and changeable by hand. Several groups may choose the same station, “— none —” lets a group sit out; stations without a group stay closed. The Timer is prefilled with the longest planned duration of the stations; switched on, all groups see the remaining time. You still end the work phase yourself. Open stations starts all stations at the same time.

    Station board and own station

    Step 4 of 11

The projector shows the station board: which group works at which station and how far along it is. On the smartphones each group sees only its own question block — with the scenario (it opens first), free choice of subquestions and the group’s shared submission state.

    The stations in the cockpit

    Step 5 of 11

In the cockpit every station has a card with its group and a check mark per submitted subquestion. Scenario & subquestions opens the view behind the station. The main button now reads Close stations — it ends the work phase for all groups together; the timer does not do that by itself either.

    Swap stations

    Step 6 of 11

After Close stations you could start the debrief right away. If every group is to do every station, do not reveal yet — otherwise the next group already knows the solution from the wall. Instead, click Open stations again in the group phase card. The groups stay together; their submissions belong to the station, and at the new one every group starts from zero.

    The board is already swapped

    Step 7 of 11

The assignment board is now prefilled swapped: each group moves on from its previous station to the next one (group 1 → station 2, group 2 → station 1; with three or more stations, one station further per run). Check, change if needed, Open stations. If the groups were planned with several rounds, switch to the new composition with Next round first — the prefill moves on in the same way.

    Debrief through all stations

    Step 9 of 11

After the last Close stations, the selection jumps to the first subquestion of the first station. End the group phase

    Step 11 of 11

Once the debrief is done, End group phase dissolves the allocation; in the analytics the answers stay marked with their group. If you want to see the runs separately there, append the stations with Ask again as “… · run 2” before the second run and assign these new entries.
